Gospel Reading: Lk 19: 1-10 (RSV)
At that time, Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town.
Now a man there named Zacchaeus,
who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man,
was seeking to see who Jesus was;
but he could not see him because of the crowd,
for he was short in stature.
So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus,
who was about to pass that way.
When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said,
"Zacchaeus, come down quickly,
for today I must stay at your house."
And he came down quickly and received him with joy.
When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying,
"He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner."
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord,
"Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor,
and if I have extorted anything from anyone
I shall repay it four times over."
And Jesus said to him,
"Today salvation has come to this house
because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.
For the Son of Man has come to seek
and to save what was lost."
Reflection:
One of the things that touched me during homly today was the priest connecting this passage to the verse from revelation about God saying, either be hot or cold but if you are lukewarm I will spit you out of my mouth. One thing we see in this story is that Zacchaeus, even though a sinner, wanted to see Jesus and know about him,and knowing this, Jesus asks if He could stay over at Zacchaeus place. Jesus gives him an opportunity to only because Jesus knew, Zacchaues had a open heart. This is something that we miss in our lives today. The world has become so lukewarm. We do not care about anything unless it personally affects us. Are there people suffering at our door stop, well it doesn't affect me. So I dont care. This is the attitude most of us have. Another thing the priest pointed out was that, the opposite of love is not hate, but it is that state of having no feelings for anything, the lukewarm state. It is more dangerous. This is the state we see in the crowd at the scene. They criticize Jesus for spending time with the sinners.
One of the things that we can do in our own lives is to look around and be open to God's calling. Because if we are open, he will definitely ask to come over. And that visit might be the life changing moment of our lives. So let us find what is preventing us from seeing Jesus and climb the tree that will take us above the obstacles and wait for him to call us by name. Have a good week.
